How much should I spend on a TV?

Only you truly know how much you should spend on a TV. Essentially, you often get what you pay for. High-end Samsung, LG and Sony TVs cost more than basic Onn. models, for instance.

In an ideal world, you want to spend as much as you can afford on the TV. A pricier TV comes with more useful features and often better picture quality. However, there are bargains to be enjoyed which is why we take a look at them so regularly.

Also, your budget should vary depending on what you need the TV for. It makes sense to spend a lot on your main living room TV but if you just want a TV for your child’s bedroom or a spare room, a cheaper TV is likely to be a more logical option.

Is it worth buying an 8K TV in 2023?

8K TVs are the future but right now, many of the best 8K TVs are very expensive. Also, not much 8K content is around. Gamers are limited to 4K while no streaming services offer 8K content. Even big sporting events are yet to be shown in 8K. However, the best 8K TVs do know how to upscale content so it looks very close to native 8K resolutions. That’s where it can be more tempting.

Ultimately, buy an 8K TV today and you’re paying a substantial premium for doing so. It’s not going to be logical for many people to do so right now. Unless you like to be an early adopter, consider buying a high-end OLED or QLED TV instead.

Should I buy an LED, QLED or OLED TV?

However, QLED TVs are getting cheaper so you may snag a bargain here. It’s important to understand the difference between QLED and OLED to see why the former is often so much more expensive.

If you want the absolute best picture quality, you need an OLED TV but if you want something that still looks great QLED will suffice too. LED is best left for your spare TV or if you simply can’t afford to spend more.

What features should I look for in a TV?

Besides knowing what panel you want for your TV, there are other features to pay attention to. Dedicated modes that can automatically kick in can be useful. For instance, many TVs have a dedicated gaming mode that detects when your games console is switched on, lowering input lag and improving the refresh rate. Some TVs like LG’s OLED range has a Filmmaker mode so that you get the best picture quality while watching a movie. Look out for features like Dolby Vision to also boost the picture.

For audio, Dolby Atmos is important on pricier TVs while DTS: Virtual X offers a limited improved mode compared to standard TV speakers.

You may also want to consider the operating system used by the TV. Pretty much all are smart TVs but LG’s webOS, Roku TV, Android TV and others are all different to use and you may have a preference.

Finally, consider how many HDMI ports you need (and whether they need to be HDMI 2.1 for the latest consoles) and what voice assistant if any you like to use.

All three TV brands are great and highly reliable options. Alongside the big three, you can also trust TCL and Vizio for better value options. They’re well respected in their price range and you can usually get a lot for your budget.

When is the best time to shop for TV deals?

The best time for pretty much all technology-based deals is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Following directly after Thanksgiving, the two sales days generally combine to turn into a weekend of big savings and that includes on TVs. It’s the ideal time of year to save big if you’re able to wait until then.

The second best time of year is usually Prime Day. Amazon’s Prime Day event often provides TVs among its lightning deals so you’ll need to be quick but by doing so, you’ll often save a huge amount on a lesser-known TV brand. Prime Day might be an Amazon event but other retailers often host their own sales so you can use this time to save elsewhere, such as at Walmart or Best Buy which both offer extensive TV deals.

Other holidays like Labor Day and Memorial Day also offer some discounts and TV deals, but these are usually not as deep a price cut as the big two sales events. There are also often TV deals throughout the year to keep you interested. After all, we can’t all wait to buy a new TV, especially if the existing one has just failed.
